Maria:

I am a mom of a 5-year-old boy, David, a 2-year-old girl, Anna, and I have a newest edition. It’s a three-month-old baby, Daniel. Back in the day, I only had David with me. We were struggling financially, so it was very difficult for me to afford a place where they could take good care of my son while I was able to go to work in order to provide more for my family.

I needed help, good help. The first time I spoke with Children First, they helped me to schedule a meeting. As soon as I opened the door, I could feel like I was in the right place with the right people. The very first thing that Children First did for us to improve our circumstances and the situation we were facing was providing childcare for my son. It was already a financial relief to have that covered and particular for my son, David. We could see that there was something not quite good with my son’s speech.

It was when I arrived here, since they’re continuously monitoring the kids and providing those services, they checked their ears, they checked their eyes, they were able to really guide me and say that, “It seems there’s something; we’re going to refer you. And the best thing is you don’t have to do anything.” Because my first thing was like, “Okay, where do I have to go? Who do I have to talk? How do I do it?” And my family advocate was like, “Don’t worry. If you agree, if you as a parent, if you’re okay with it, we’ll take care of it. We’ll guide you.” And I mean, that was a blessing. There’s a lot of inclusion as a parent. It’s not that they do it alone, they do it with you.

I think one of my worst fears as a mom, of course, is not being able to provide my children with the right care for them to succeed in life. Children First really covered that spot. They helped me to find confidence. I know my kids are still receiving the education they need to take the next step. There’s a thousand things that I wish I could tell you every day. Being grateful, it’s not enough to describe how I feel. My family’s journey has changed because of Children First. It wouldn’t be the same.
