Speaker 1:

Each year, a special group of young boys and girls attend summer school at Children First. They’re known as Elaine’s kids. Many of them come from dual-language homes, and all are preparing to enter kindergarten in the fall. Without the chance to attend Children First from June through August, they might suffer from what is known as summer learning loss. This happens when kids do not have a chance to continue learning over the summer. Children from low-income families are especially affected, and it can severely limit their chances for kindergarten success. Yet thanks to the generosity of Dr. Elaine Merib, the children in our Elaine’s Kids program get the chance to work with their teachers during the summer to read and write, draw and practice math skills, play, and interact with one another. There are opportunities that help them continue to learn and grow and that give them the best chance for success, both in kindergarten and beyond. We want to thank Dr. Merib for helping us change young lives every day at children first, but even more special than that. Our kids want to thank her as well.
